*What is the purpose of adhering to a protocol suite? The protocol suite is an open standard meaning anyone can use the standards. It is important that networking industries and manufacturers use the protocol suite when creating software or developing programs and stay within the standards in order for the software and programs to interact and work together properly.
*What is the role of standards organization in establishing protocols for network interoperability?Network standards facilitate the interoperability of network technologies and are very important. The various organizations that maintain and manage protocol standards enable the internet as we know it run smoothly and work together. Without the standards the network and internet could not interact and communicate.
*How are the TCP/IP model and OSI model used to facilitate standardization in the communication process? There are dozens of protocols and they are organized in layers in the TCP/IP model. There are four layers, the Application Layer, Transport Layer, Internet Layer, and the Network Access Layer. The TCP/IP protocol suite is used with both the sending and receiving hosts, providing end-to-end delivery of applications over the network. The OSI has seven layers but works in mostly the same fashion as the TCP/IP but was to be used on an international level.
*Why did RFCs become the process for establishing standards? An internet standard is a Request for Comments (RFC) or a set of RFCs. To become a standard or part of a standard the RFC begins as an internet draft. After several revisions it is reviewed and if approved it can then become a standard.
*What is the RFC process? After an RFC is submitted as an internet draft and it is then reviewed and published by the RFC editor and is labeled as a proposed standard. Later, when maturity has reached a certain level, the RFC is elevated as an internet standard.
*How does data encapsulation allow data to be transported across the network?Data encryption allows many devices to send messages and data across the network by dividing all the data into small manageable pieces called segmenting. With segmentation of the data many conversations can be interleaved on the network in a process called multiplexing. The reliability of network communication is increased by segmentation, however, it is a very complex process.
*How do local hosts access remote resources on a network? When a host needs to send a message or access remote resources on a network it must use a default gateway, or router. The Ethernet frame with the encapsulated IP packet is sent to the default gateway, or router, and then the router sends it to the destination.
